Living In The Margins

What is a parable?
Simply, a placing beside; a story with a spiritual point, an illustration from everyday life that all could relate to; taking something that is understood to illustrate something that is not understood.
In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus is looking for the transformation of the heart. He knows that for anything to change in our lives, it must start in our heart. In the Hebrew understanding, our heart was the seat of intellect and emotion, and the will, the center of our spiritual life.

Soil #1…along the path, vs. 5, 12
The hard-hearted hearer, one who is unresponsive; living in the margins.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Soil #2…on the rocks, vs. 6:13
The superficial heart, one who is impulsive; living in the margins.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Soil #3…among the thorns, vs. 7, 14
The crowded heart, one who is preoccupied, cluttered; living in the margins.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Soil #4…in good soil, vs. 8, 15
The listening heart, one who is responsive and committed to action; living in the middle!
